Asics derived from the Latin phrase – Anima sana in corpore sane – a healthy mind in a healthy body. This also represents the company’s maxim. Kihachiro Onitsuka founded the Onitsuka Co. Ltd. in the town of Kobe, Japan in 1949, because he wanted to encourage children to do sports. His sneakers with the striking tiger stripes were distributed very fast and soon became a big seller outside of Japan. In 1977 Onitsuka merged with two other companies and was renamed Asics. Shortly after the first Asics research laboratory was built in Kobe, focusing on the development of running shoes. The innovative, trend-setting Gel-Cushioningsystem was invented, which became a part of numerous running shoes.

Today the worldwide success of Asics is not only based on its product placement in Qunetin Tarentino’s movie Kill Bill. Asics’ notable collaborations, strictly limited editions and special collaboration together with e.g. Ronnie Fieg. Every affectionate sneaker lover has a pair of Asics in his shoe rack.
