Founded in 1966 by Douglas and Susie Thompkins, The North Face is named after the coldest, iciest and hardest to climb side of a mountain – quite the name choice! Initially, they were selling mountaineering equipment in a small store in North Beach, San Francisco, and two years later moved to Berkeley, on the other side of the San Francisco Bay. For the first time, The North Face began producing clothing and equipment for adventurers, that want to reach their outdoor limits. The North Face has been further known for sponsoring expeditions around the world, adding ski clothing, sleeping bags and backpacks for extreme athletes to its portfolio. In the 1990s, The North Face's apparel became more technical and functional, and it resonated not only with winter athletes, but with hikers, runners, and climbers as well. Even today, The North Face is still the first choice when it comes to "outdoor" and "adventure".
